BURUNDI - KAWA ZAMURABAWE (8,31$/LB)
The Kawa Zamurabawe Cooperative began its operations in 2015 with 82 producer members. Located in the Bururi province, the cooperative now processes coffee cherries from 801 small landowners spread across 6 surrounding hills: Musenyi, Muheka, Karambi, Rubirizi, Nyacambuko, and Kanyinya.
This region is known for its cooler and drier climate compared to the more northern coffee-growing regions of the country.
When coffee seeds were first introduced by the Germans in the 1930s, Bururi farmers refused to comply with the obligation to grow coffee trees on their land. Instead, they resisted by pouring boiling water over the trees until the authorities believed that coffee production was impossible and unsuitable for their terroir.
As a result, coffee production is relatively recent in the region, but the quality of the cup is very high, and the farmers are highly committed to their practices. This cooperative is also certified organic.
